Increasing Sales Without Selling Out

You see, I SINCERELY BELIEVE that Martial Arts School Owners like you, who TRULY care about their students, who are TRULY committed to delivering the highest quality program, and who are completely invested in helping their community DESERVE to earn a six figure (or better) income, and live a lifestyle similar to any other TRUE professional, like an Attorney, Physician, Accountant, or Financial Advisor – Frankly, we make much more of an impact on the lives of our student than just about anyone else – don’t you agree?

Now, while I have you here…let me say that I have no idea what style of martial arts you teach…or how many stripes are on your belt…what awards you’ve received or trophies you’ve won, and frankly…it doesn’t matter much anyway.

It’s not that I don’t respect your style or your accomplishments, but when it comes to growing your martial arts school…only what I’m about to reveal to you is relevant. (And your particular “style” of art, rank, or lineage has virtually NO impact on the success of your business.)

I’ve worked with all range of schools, all types of instructors with equally incredible results.

Whether you teach kids or adults.  MMA, BJJ or Tai Chi.  Whether you are a traditionalist teaching Tae Kwon Do or, Karate-Do or a more progressive school – these tools, strategies, and skills will work for you.

It’s important that you not fall in an all too common trap.

You are setting yourself up for failure if you think or utter the words – that won’t work for me because……… (fill in the blank.)

What excuse do the failures and “also ran’s” of our business use?

All manner of things.   They excuse their own mediocrity by saying things such as:

That won’t work for me because I’m an MMA school and they are about Tae Kwon Do (untrue.)

That won’t work because I’m in a small town (or, big city.)

That won’t work for me because I teach adults (or, kids.)  That won’t work for me because my students would never….. (pay that much, sign contracts, commit to lessons, whatever)

I’m sure you won’t fall into that trap. You’re a winner not a whiner, or else you wouldn’t be reading this package of information.

I’ve helped produce $1,000,000+ per year Tae Kwon Do Schools, MMA/BJJ Schools AND Adults only Soft-Style Tai Chi/Kung Fu Schools. Every style imaginable with everything from “Little Ninja’s” to Senior Citizens. Schools that are most fitness oriented as well as those who are mostly kids and personal development oriented.

In big cities (NY, LA, Chicago) and in tiny little towns.    Don’t use that excuse for failure.  This will work for your style, students and in your town.

Having recognized those traps, it’s important for you to know that I know what your life is like as a school owner. I have been running my own schools since 1974 — and, unlike most — never really had any other job or career other than running a school or a chain of schools.

Every day as a school owner we have to grapple with competing priorities and struggle to remain true to our martial arts roots. All the while you work to create a successful business and a worthwhile career.

You MUST Charge a reasonable Tuition Rate – Up Front.

Now, I don’t know what you are charging. In my schools, new students pay $197.00 per month initially with $400 to $600 down payment.

Many of our successful member schools are charging anywhere from $150 to $300 or more, per month for new enrollments.

What are you charging?

If you are not receiving that tuition rate, or are afraid prospective students will balk at that amount of tuition, then you need to learn to create the perception and reality of value for your students — and their parents. This is more than just teaching an exciting INTRODUCTORY Class or two.

Now, before you second guess yourself –  this let me tell you a short story.

Every year we have a “Black Belt Retreat & Testing” in Breckenridge or Keystone, Colorado.   Our students test for three days typically with little or no rest.  Near the end I always take the Black Belt  (typically 200 or 300 of them) and the parents in a room and ask a simple question.    It goes something like this:

“If I had a time machine and could take you back to the day you started in martial arts, if I would give you every penny you’ve paid and every minute you’ve spent training back.  Would you make a different decision? “

Well – everyone – always says hell no.

Now, I ask:

“What if I could take you back and give you $100,000, $250,000, even $1,000,000 to have decided NOT to train in martial arts.  Would you take that deal?”

Now, I don’t know about your school – although if you are of the quality that I suspect you are I’m assuming it’s true for you as well – but for us the answer is always and has always been – no way.

If that’s true.    If your training and the social and emotional development that your students go through on the way to Black Belt is really so valuable – why would you be hesitant to charge a tuition level that’s really both appropriate and adequate to give you REAL financial success along the way?

Now, you may be ready to say…. My students wouldn’t… or, in my town I can’t…. or, everyone else is charging $75 how could I……
