I remember when I really learned my lesson on this point.  With a strong six figure advertising budget each year I was constantly looking for new and better ways to create traffic for my schools.  My “number” Each and Every Month was 120 – for years.  Meaning I had to create 120 new enrollments every month to be on target with 5 schools.  Each month, each year – 1,400+ new students per year.

Anyway, back to the story.  At one time I hired a big local ad agency.  Their professional artists, copywriters, media buyers, account representatives, fancy offices in “lodo” (lower downtown.)   We produced new TV commercials, bought air time, created pretty newspaper ads, including even a major campaign to go along with one of the movie promotions that we did (I think it was Karate Kid III.)

Well after spending many Thousands of Dollars with the fancy agency my results went WAY down.

It was when I was working on my Master’s Degree and remember talking about my quandary with the genius, Ph.D. director of the program:  Ron Gist.  One day I laid out all of the various ads that I’d used.  Some that I’d created in the basement of my Condo building while still living in Washington, D.C., others that I had created in the later 80’s or early 90’s, and the ads created by my expensive and fancy agency.   Next I asked him which he liked better.

Well, he paused to consider then said…..”which one pulled better?”

When I pointed to the ad that I had created after having enrolled 4,500 or so new students… without skipping a beat he said:  “I love that one.”

What’s the lesson?

You really need someone with lots of REAL World Experience – NOW – in generating enrollment for martial arts schools.

That’s ultimately what I bring to the table – over and above essentially anyone else in Martial Arts.
