NAPMA | Safe Training Environment Initiative

The NAPMA Safe Training Environment Initiative

NAPMA is developing a martial-arts-specific operating and verification standard designed to reduce the risk of abuse, grooming, bullying, hazing, harassment, retaliation and boundary violations involving children and adults in martial arts schools, BJJ academies and MMA gyms.

Development status. Everything published in this section is a substantive development draft — not a finished certification product, legal opinion, insurance representation, or guarantee of safety. It is published openly so that U.S. sports-law counsel, child-safeguarding professionals, trauma-informed response specialists, insurers and underwriters, and discipline-specific martial arts practitioners can review and improve it before any pilot or public certification.

Why this exists

A course certificate proves attendance. It does not prove safe recruitment, appropriate supervision, functioning reporting routes, disciplined physical-contact practices, or ongoing compliance. Training for youth-serving organizations is abundant; verified implementation inside a martial arts school is not.

Martial arts also carry risks that general youth-safety programs were never written for: close-contact grappling, stretching and spotting, private lessons, changing areas, belt rank and promotion authority, travel and tournaments, and teen assistant instructors. NAPMA’s position is that the association should own the martial-arts-specific standard and verification process, while using recognized third parties for specialized abuse-prevention and harassment education.

Who we are asking to review this

NAPMA is actively seeking review and comment from sports-law counsel; child-safeguarding experts; trauma-informed response specialists; insurance brokers and carriers; BJJ, grappling, traditional martial arts and MMA technical reviewers; adult-student and women’s-safety representatives; and parents and youth-serving organization leaders.

If you work in one of those areas, or you own a school willing to be part of a closed founding pilot cohort, contact NAPMA.

Reference does not imply endorsement. The Standard is an original NAPMA development draft informed by public frameworks. Naming an organization anywhere in this section does not imply that organization’s endorsement, authorization, jurisdiction, accreditation, or partnership. NAPMA will not represent any partnership, insurance benefit, or use of marks without a written agreement.
